Devyani Tewari earned her law degree from NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad. During her studies at NALSAR she served as Teaching Assistant (Law & Sociology) and went on exchange to Cumberland School of Law, Samford University, USA. She was instrumental in the founding and working of an organisation, named, Saplings, which worked towards environmental protection. At NALSAR, she was awarded the Mr. Cheemalakonda V. Dikshitulu Centenary Gold Medal for being the topper in International Law.
As Research & Advocacy Officer at Lawyers Collective-Women’s Rights Initiative, she worked closely with Ms Indira Jaising on research projects, cases, public policy, human rights and related disciplines. She also served as Research Assistant to Ms. Indira Jaising during the latter’s tenure as Bok Visiting International Professor at University of Pennsylvania Law School. Following her stint at Lawyers Collective, Ms Tewari pursued her postgraduate studies at London School of Economics and Political Science on a Chevening Scholarship. After her return to India, she taught an elective course on Comparative Constitutional Rights at NLSIU, Bangalore. Thereafter, she taught at University of Petroleum and Energy Studies.
Her research focuses on gender and disability rights and the intersectionality of gender and disability. To raise awareness on mental health and neurological problems, she was a contributing columnist for Huffington Post. Her L.L.M. thesis focussed upon reasonable adjustments made by employers for persons with mental health problems. During her studies in the United Kingdom, she interned at Muscular Dystrophy, London where she helped persons with disabilities in accessing employment opportunities by reaching out to them.
