Sachin specializes in international law and policy with a focus on trade, intellectual property, and environmental governance. He serves as an expert for the Department of Biotechnology project to develop a national policy framework on synthetic biology for India. 

 

He is a current member of the Commission on Education and Communication of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). He contributes regularly towards environmental governance negotiations at international organizations including the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)  in the capacity of a Senior Research Fellow with the think tank – Forum for Law, Environment, Development and Governance (FLEDGE).

 

Sachin completed his LLM in International Law from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva (IHEID) as an IHEID scholar in 2018. He worked closely with several international organizations during his time in Geneva between 2017 and 2019. As part of his Master’s program, he was a researcher on the report “(In)Coherencies In International Investment Agreement Networks” for United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). In 2018, he was engaged as a Junior Associate for the Regional Trade Agreements (RTA) Exchange program at the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD). From 2018-19, he worked with the Development Agenda Coordination and SMEs and Entrepreneurship Support Divisions at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

 

Sachin’s research interests are at the interface of emerging technologies, Intellectual Property frameworks and development needs of the Global South. As a consultant for the Access to Knowledge (A2K) program at the Centre for Internet and Society, he coordinated the Pervasive Technologies project in 2017. In 2016, he functioned as a local program coordinator and a youth focal point for the Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) network of the UN University, Japan. In 2015, he was the recipient of the Dean’s Scholarship at the WIPO Academy Masters in Intellectual Property Law instituted at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Australia. In 2013, he contributed to the Uttarakhand State “Forest Policies to support Conservation and Sustainable Use of Medicinal Plants.”

 

Sachin completed his undergraduate degree in Law and Arts from the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Kochi. At NUALS, he had the opportunity to implement ideas from scratch while functioning as the Coordinator for the Centre for Environment and Law (2012-14). He was also the founding editor of the Environment, Law and Society Journal (ELSJ) published by Lexis Nexis (2013-14) and was a member of the winning team of the Amity National Intellectual Property moot in 2013.

 

Outside his academic work, he finds balance by pursuing his artistic interests. He worked as a part-time performing artist in Australia (2015) and has conducted art exhibitions exploring the themes of gender and mythology (Kochi 2011,13). He also managed the photojournalism page, “Humans of Geneva” in 2019.
