Student Council

The Student Council shall in its entirety consist of the Core Members, the Class Representatives and the Batch Representatives. 

Core Members 

The term “Core Members” refer to the members of the Student Council who are elected by all the members of Student Body during the annual JGLS Student Council General Elections:  

  • JGLS Student Council President 
  • JGLS Student Council Vice-President 
  • JGLS Student Council General Secretary 
  • JGLS Student Council Cultural Secretary 
  • JGLS Student Council Treasurer 

 Class Representatives 

Every class section of respective batches shall have their representatives in the JGLS Student Council. Each section shall have two representatives (one male and one female). However, in case the strength of a class is low (less than 10), there shall be one representative for the entire class (male or female).  

Batch Representatives 

Unless otherwise stated, the elected Class Representatives shall elect two Batch Representatives amongst themselves from their respective programs. 

 

  1. To appropriate and determine student activities.
  2. To appropriate and determine the student activities’ fees.
  3. To establish a Student Council Treasury.
  4. To establish Student Activity societies’.
  5. To require, at its discretion, financial reports from organizations, societies, committees and any other body established under this Constitution and/or affiliated to the Student Council.
  6. To allocate funds to the organizations, societies, committees and any other establishment under this Constitution and/or affiliated to the Student Council.
  7. To hold meetings with the University Registrar, Vice Chancellor, JGLS Dean, Associate Deans, Assistant Deans and other JGLS and JGU Administrative personnel and deliberate and to make necessary recommendations, and to hold referendums and to take actions regarding the JGLS student welfare policy, or rules to uphold the JGLS Bill of Rights and to promote the general welfare of the Student Body at JGLS.
  8. To form various ad hoc committees including the following but not limited to:
    1. JGLS mess committee
    2. JGLS Information Technology and Web Sense Committee
    3. JGLS Male Student Housing Committee
    4. JGLS Female Student Housing Committee
    5. JGLS Student Representatives for Disciplinary Hearings Committee
    6. JGLS Student Cultural events management Committee
    7. Any other committee as approved by the JGLS Student Council
  9. To assist the JGU Sports department in organizing sports events at JGU.
  10. The Student Council reserves the right to impeach the members of the Student Council as per procedure laid down in this Constitution.
  11. To update and amend this Constitution, the Schedules to this Constitution and its various codes as per the procedure laid down in this Constitution.
  1. Uphold and implement the provisions of this Constitution, the Schedule to this Constitution and its various codes, and exercise general managerial authority over the businesses and activities of the Student Council and the Student Body.
  2. Be the official spokesperson of the Student Body.
  3. Call and preside over open house meetings and other functions of the Student Body.
  4. Call and preside over the Student Council Meetings.
  5. Serve as the primary contact with the JGLS and JGU Administration.
  6. Call and preside over meetings and functions of the Student Body.
  7. Have a Veto power to put an agenda for second reading after first voting.
  8. Have a right to vote only when her or his vote may be required to break a tie.
  9. Circulate the agenda for all Student Council meetings with the JGLS Administration, JGU U-Hall Staff, and the Student Body.
  10. Address the Student Council and the Student Body at the commencement of each semester and at other times upon invitation of the JGLS Student Council.
  11. Act as an official representative of the JGLS or the University upon request from the Dean or Assistant Dean(s) of JGLS or Registrar or Vice-Chancellor.
  12. Temporarily delegate her or his authority to the Vice-President, if required.
  13. Make recommendations for legislation to the Student Council.
  14. With approval of the Student Council, create Special Purpose Committees, to address issues or achieve a specific purpose or organize events for efficient administration of student affairs. Such bodies may be ad hoc committees created for such specific purposes, which may be dissolved by the President after that purpose is achieved.
  15. Appoint members and chairpersons to Special Purpose Committees after consultation with the Student Council.
  16. Provide for the preparation and presentation of the Student Council budget to the JGLS Administration for the purpose of raising funds with the assistance of the Treasurer.
  17. Have the right to Veto any expenditure incurred by the Student Council after consultation with the Treasurer, which are not entitled by this Constitution, the Schedule to this Constitution, and its various codes.
  18. Evaluate projects, activities, programs, and initiatives commissioned by the Student Council and assess the Student Council.
  19. Propose changes or amendments in this Constitution, the Schedule to this Constitution and its various codes as per procedure established in Article 27 of this Constitution.
  20. Compile a brief synopsis of her or his yearly activities and produce a transition report at the close of term of office.
  21. Other duties and responsibilities of the President as shall be defined in the JGLS Constitution.
  22. Serve in lieu of the President in her or his absence or disability and succeed to that office, should it become permanently vacated until the next Student Council General Elections.
  23. Ensure effective channel of communication between the Student Council and JGLS Administration.
  24. Along with the General Secretary, appraise monthly decisions and proposals made by the Student Council.
  25. Chair the JGLS Students Grievances Resolution Cell, aided by other members of the Student Council and develop and implement procedures to conduct its affairs, ensuring that the grievances of members of the Student Body are received and addressed in a prompt and effective and confidential manner.
  26. Make recommendations to fill the vacant seats in the Student Council with the existing members of the Student Council.
  27. Along with the President ensure transparency in the functions of the Student Council.
  28. Seek information or reasons from members of the Student Council in the event of their absence from a Student Council or Student Body meetings.
  29. Evaluate projects, activities, programs, and initiatives commissioned by the Student Council and report to the President.
  30. Propose changes or amendments in this Constitution, the Schedule to this Constitution and its various codes as per procedure established in Article 27 of this Constitution.
  31. Compile a brief synopsis of her or his yearly activities and produce a transition report at the close of term of office.
  32. Comply with the other duties and responsibilities of the President as shall be defined in the JGLS Constitution.
  33. Serve as the record keeper and administrator for the Student Council, including filing Student Council documents, Disciplinary Committee hearing decisions, and archiving the same in the JGU Global library.
  34. Ensure the publication of a column in the Student Handbook at the beginning of each academic year:
  35. Be responsible for organization of all Inter or Intra College cultural activities or events, or by Student Council in association with organizations, societies, committees and any other body established under this Constitution and/or affiliated to the Student Council.
  36. Plan a schedule of Arts and Cultural activities to be held during the year along with budgetary requirements, and present the same to the President and other Student Council members for discussion with the JGLS and JGU Administration.
  37. Convene and organize activities through societies and ensure their smooth functioning.
  38. Compile a brief synopsis of her or his yearly activities and produce a transition report at the close of term of office.
